We have two school districts that cover the communities that make up the WCRC District 12. The two school districts are the Derry Area School District and the Greater Latrobe School District. Our school districts have a direct impact on all residents, regardless of whether you have school children or not.
If you have children or grandchildren attending one of our schools, you are counting on our school systems to ensure that they receive the kind of education, socialization skills, athletic and arts opportunities, and more needed for your young family members to be prepared for success in life. Our school board directors need to be willing to ensure that parents’ voices are welcomed and heard, that our children remain safe, and must be willing to at the same time understand the resources faculty and administration need are considered as well when making decisions.
Those that do and do not have children attending our schools have a vested interest in our respective school district as well. The decisions your school board makes have a direct impact on the taxes you pay each year, and while we all want the children in our communities to have the best possible education, having School Directors that recognize the need to be fiscally responsible with your tax dollars is important. That requires school board directors that are capable and willing to take steps to make sure our schools are properly maintained, are kept safe, and that priority is given to real needs.
Our students of today are your future employees, managers, business owners, elected officials, and more. We must get this right, so we ask that you get involved. Take the time to attend school board meetings from time to time. Keep an eye on the agenda for upcoming meetings, take a few minutes and review the minutes from school board meetings. Take the time to know who your school directors are and when you have concerns or ideas how to make things better and take the time to reach out and contact them if faculty and administrators are not responsive to your concerns.
Our school boards want parents and citizens to get involved, to attend meetings, and to provide feedback. Take a few minutes each month to see what is on the agenda, and ensure the right decisions are being made to educate our students, while being fiscally responsible to taxpayers. If you can’t make meetings, review the videos, check the minutes, and contact your school board members if you have questions or concerns.
Both school districts have well organized websites that list contact information for board members, meeting schedules, agendas/minutes/meeting documents, committee information, and both have board meeting videos available:
